Size and Molecular Weight
The most distinct difference between Humic and Fulvic Acids is their size and molecular weight. Humic Acid is a larger and heavier molecule than Fulvic Acid, which results in their differing solubility and ability to interact with nutrients.
Fulvic Acid contains smaller molecules with more oxygenation, allowing superior absorption and cell permeability – even crossing the blood-brain barrier. Its electrolytic properties also promote excellent mineral transport.
It’s worth noting that Ascent Nutrition's Humic & Fulvic Acid supplement is 20X smaller than other products. The smaller size of our Humic Acid helps promote optimal absorption, allowing you to experience the full spectrum of health-supporting benefits the compounds offer.
Solubility in Water
Due to its smaller size and lower molecular weight, Fulvic Acid is more soluble in water than Humic Acid.
While Humic Acid is mostly insoluble below pH 2, Fulvic Acid has excellent solubility from pH 0.5 to 13. This higher solubility allows Fulvic Acid to be more readily absorbed by plants and humans, making it more effective at enhancing nutrient uptake and utilization.
Nutrient and Mineral Content
Both Humic and Fulvic Acids are rich in nutrients and minerals, but their compositions vary.
Humic Acid contains a wider array of nutrients and minerals than Fulvic Acid, but they are not as bioavailable due to the larger molecular size of Humic Acid.
Because of its low molecular weight, Fulvic Acid has high bioavailability. It is rich in electrolytes like magnesium, calcium, potassium, and sodium [1].
Fulvic Acid also contains diverse vitamins as well as free radical scavengers, amino acids, phytochemical compounds, and trace minerals—most of them occurring in ionic form. For this reason, Fulvic Acids are great conductors of electricity and they improve the absorption of other compounds interacting with them. This is why so many people in general, as well as our loyal customers, specifically use our Humic and Fulvic Acid supplement together with our other products and nutrients.
Color
Humic acid is typically dark brown to black in color. On the other hand, Fulvic acid is generally lighter in color, ranging from yellow to light brown.
Specific Humic and Fulvic Acid Benefits
While both Humic and Fulvic Acids mostly offer similar health-promoting benefits, some are more specific to each compound.
For instance, Fulvic Acid is particularly effective at supporting cellular energy production and nutrient absorption due to its smaller size.
On the other hand, Humic Acid is known for its ability to support healthy immune function, including promoting gut health and supporting a healthy inflammatory response [2] [3].
Despite the differences between Humic and Fulvic Acid, the two compounds work synergistically to provide targeted health-supporting benefits when properly combined.
For example, Humic Acid may increase the permeability of cell walls by acting as a dilator while Fulvic Acid acts as a chelator by binding to and carrying minerals into the cells [3].
